Great talk about game development in Silverlight

17 Dec

Last night CNUG hosted a talk by Mads Laumann about game development in Silverlight 3. We had about 15 participants and it was a really great talk!

Mads talked about how to start developing games and about the fundamental principals in game development. Furthermore he showed some samples of existing games developed in Silverlight.

Slides and demos can be downloaded from Mads Laumann’s blog.

Microsoft Campus

13 Dec

One thing that I forgot to mention in my previous post about my trip to Redmond, was my impression of Microsoft Campus.

On my second day at Redmond, I attended the first Silverlight Usersgroup Meeting – it was held at Microsoft Campus building 40. I thought that it was a piece of cake to find but totally underestimated the size of Microsoft Campus. After wandering around the campus in 30+ minutes a late Wednesday in total darkness and –10 degrees I found building 40.

The next day I attended the Silverlight Partner Summit held at building 33 – again I underestimated the size of the campus but this time it was a wonderful frosty morning so actually it was a really nice walk around campus.

4 days in Redmond

13 Dec

I have just arrived back in Copenhagen after 4 days in Redmond.

I travelled to Redmond to participate in a 2-day Microsoft Silverlight Summit. This year there were 250 partners mostly from US but also from other parts of the World.

The first day of the summit was very general and had focus on the business part of Silverlight 3 and 4. The second day was deep-dive into the different areas of Silverlight 4 with focus on RIA and Media.

I met a lot of people (John Papa, Nikhil Kothari, Steve Stanfield, Joe Stegman, Karen Corby, Brad Abrams) at the summit and got some really good contacts – really a unique opportunity to meet fellow Silverlight geeks.

Looking forward to Mix10 in Las Vegas.

Make your Silverlight background transparent

10 Dec

It’s not always that you want your Silverlight application to have a background color. Instead you can use the color from the hosting HTML page – and it’s easy!

In your HTML that hosts the Silverlight object add these parameters and you’re done:

<param name="background" value="transparent" />
<param name="windowless" value="true" />

Getting ready for the Silverlight Partner Summit

10 Dec

Yesterday I arrived to Redmond to participate in the yearly Silverlight Partner Summit – a summit with focus on the future of Silverlight.

Through Twitter I discovered that the Seattle Silverlight Users Group held their first meeting at building 40 at Microsoft. After walking around the Microsoft campus in 30+ minutes I finally found the building – only a little bit frozen.

About 30 people joined the meeting and it was great talking to some of the local Silverlight geeks. Scott Stanfield (CEO at Vertigo) gave a short presentation of some of the stuff that Vertigo have made in Silverlight and talked about why Vertigo has chosen Silverlight as technology.

I also talked to Adam Kinney (technical evangelist at Microsoft) trying to get the release date of the go-live license to Silverlight 4 beta. He obviously loves his job to much to tell such secrets…

Map My Climate

9 Dec

One of the projects that I have been working on lately is The project is made entirely in Silverlight and my job was to build some extensions to it. I have also been working on a Surface edition of the website – a really cool project :)

The website is an environmentally conscious site that illustrates how much Co2 we produce and how we can decrease it. The website is in Danish and therefore naturally limited to Danish users.

New York Times have an article about the Bright Green event in Forum, Copenhagen. In the article they mention “MapMyClimate” as one of the environmentally conscious software programs that are developed part of the Bright Green event.

You can read the article from New York Times here and visit MapMyClimate here.
